Have You Heard About ChatGPT? Our Take On The Game-Changing AI Chatbot
Episode Summary
What happens when artificial intelligence can help you pick a White Elephant gift, write a poem on command, and generate a business proposal-level strategy—within seconds?
In this timely episode, John and Tony share their first real experiences with ChatGPT (an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI) and why it immediately felt bigger than a passing tech trend. They compare the experience to traditional search engines—highlighting how ChatGPT responds like a conversation, offering clear, context-aware answers instead of a list of links.
From creative brainstorming to workplace problem-solving, education, and even policy influence, the conversation explores the ripple effects of instant knowledge access—and why this tool may reshape how future leaders think, learn, and make decisions.

John: You’re listening to The Present Professional.
Tony: Where we explore the intersections of personal and professional development.
John: To change your experience of life and work with every episode.
Tony: So tune in, grab your notebook, and let’s go. Let’s go.
John: Welcome to another episode of the present professional podcast. And right now we’re a little freaked out to say the least. There’s a new AI chatbot system that just came out, released by OpenAI, and it’s called ChatGPT. And I was told about it by some office mates of mine in my coworking space. And so I decided to check it out and just reviewing it before Tony and I started recording this morning. And I have been blown away. So if you haven’t heard about chat GPT yet, we’re here to talk about our first experiences and you can go right ahead. Google it first thing that comes up. You sign up and you can just chat directly with it directly through your browser. So if you’re ready and you want to just open it up right now, go ahead and. Here is my first interaction. I had a white elephant gift exchange, and I wasn’t sure about what would be a good option for an under $20 gift. I was like, well, this might be good for the AI. I asked it just thinking, okay, maybe it’ll give me some ideas. Not only did it give me five ideas for a gift under $20, but it added the emotional part of what makes a white elephant gift exchange something to remember. It literally said, remember, the goal of a white elephant gift exchange is to have fun and be lighthearted, to choose a gift that is sure to bring a smile to someone’s face. It gave me five different options that were all really good options. I chose one and had it expand on that. It was a board game. I was like, wow, that’s such a great idea. It gave me and it suggested It suggested cards against humanity or code names at first. And I came back and said, I like the idea of the board game. What are some new ones that are out? I feel like people already have those games. And it listed five new games, four of which I had never heard of, and explained them all in a short one to two sentence descriptions that were just very human and conversational that you can understand right away. And. I don’t know, I was just I was just completely shocked at how good the answers were and well, anyone that’s listening to this that was a part of that white elephant gift exchange. Yes, your gift was sourced by AI. But but it came it came with the right intention. Game with the best intention. Right. Right. Like, you know, it’s why not? Why not get all of the source, a global source of data for the best white elephant gift for you. So anyone that that received my board game, you’re welcome. Or actually thank maybe thank chat GPT. Right. Partly. But it’s like saying that, just looking at the latest, one of the latest New York Times articles that was published on it, and they described it exactly how my experience was, because it’s saying that you know that these new chatbots that are there’s a few different companies that are looking at this technology and that have been developing this technology but they said you know many experts believe these chatbots are more are poised to reinvent or even replace internet search engines like google and bing It makes sense because it gives you the information that you’re looking for in a just very tight human form that you can easily understand. The way that they said that is, it serves up information in tight sentences rather than long lists of blue links. They explain concepts in ways that people can understand, and they deliver facts while also generating business plans, term paper topics, and other new ideas from scratch. So they described it perfectly. We’ve been exploring it this morning. And I don’t know, we’re just so excited to share all of these things with you. Tony, what are you thinking right now?
Tony: Man, I’m thinking that for me, I’m somebody who is always like, You know we as sure one day you know a is gonna take over the world assure like one day a is gonna be able to write papers for us in my. You know design models and things like that but this chat gpt may one day. feel like today. It made it really realistic because when you first told me about it, you talked about the white elephant, I started shopping for Christmas gifts. I was like, okay, so what do you get this age kid or what do you get this group of people? And it gave me like 10 different options for each individual group. And then like you said, I started to dig into the gifts more and try to see, okay, so what about this candle versus that? Or this calendar versus this one? Just all these different toy ideas started popping up and I’m like, This is more than Google. Google will give you a list of various different ideas and options that you search for, but this gives you a scientific, conversational way to dig into whatever it is that you’re looking for. I was blown away. You shared it with me around Christmas time, and I told you it’s the gift that keeps on giving. So thank you for my early Christmas gift. But for me, I’d say that I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks now, and man, I’m really impressed. I’m interested to see what they end up doing with this. So hopefully, all the professionals out there that are listening, you get a chance to take advantage of it. sooner than later so that, you know, one day I’m sure this will be something you have to pay for and something that, you know, you have to subscribe to or something like that. But if you’re listening now, jump in now. That’s why we even decided to do today’s episode around chat GPT because it’s mind blowing. It’s a game changer. It’s a game changer for sure. What do you think this looks like for the future of work, though? Oh, man.
John: I mean, it’s that. It’s a global bank of knowledge that you can ask anything to. I can imagine days back in doing research on pricing and stuff. Can you gather me a competitive Intel on the price of a competitive price for whatever product I’m trying to launch into this market? Or what’s the best way for me to handle this response from my employees? It’s like when something can answer things like that with a direct sentence with options, like you’re having a conversation, you know, that changes the game. Now, if we’re talking about, you know, write me a proposal for, you know, write me a proposal for a five year, you know, a five year term contract where, you know, we have 100% exclusivity into delivering whatever product or, you know, write me a proposal for this kind of customer that is new to the product and is, you know, maybe in a late adopter phase of a technology adoption curve. And if it can give you that, I mean, that takes out like that could that question could take a team, you know, a six month project to figure out that could take a team of people researching, you know, ideating whiteboarding, coming up with a go-to-market strategy for a new product, or a product that serves some need, or even a service that serves some need, and you can ask that to an AI, and it come up with the entire proposal, or the entire strategy?
Tony: What?
John: Yeah. Like that is, you know, the company that has that technology hostage or, or the rights to it or whatever, it’s infinite. It’s impossible to compete with that. So I think it will change the fabric of what we know about business or product introduction, even invention. It’s scary how much this is even just in a research phase. This is the research release for us to be able to interact with it for free right now so it can learn based on what we’re asking it and it can learn based on its own responses and our feedback. It’s only going to get better after this beta iteration. Just imagine, if it can answer a question like that, There’s no competing with that. Yeah, I mean, what about like what do you think from like a from a creative standpoint? You know, I’m thinking about like. You know. Music and art and you know. What what happens then?
Tony: You know, it’s like it would be like an artist having its best friend. You know it’s it’s it would be your best friend in the one who is not critical of. your ideas or your art or what have you, it’s the best friend that is genuinely supporting you with no emotion tied to the support. And that could tremendously boost somebody’s creativity. Like when you ask a human a question, the response has various emotional ties to the response. When you ask AI or, you know, chat GTP a question, you are getting a straight up answer. You are getting not only an answer, but a scientific research based answer. One that is going to only push your idea further either in the exact pinpoint direction or somewhere in the ballpark. You know where you need to be that’s gonna be interesting for creative to have that side so that they can create like if you are creative and you’re looking for some. No data to support your creative work. You get the data in the information from here and then you take that and then you create on the other side i mean it’s like a. a win-win, it’s really mind-blowing. I think about what is going to happen to the future of education with kids, with even Logan, my son, who is going to be growing up in an environment where he can use technology like this. For me growing up, there was no way that I could even fathom something like where I could ask a question. Google wasn’t even around, I’m aging myself or whatever. Sorry Gen Z, Google was not around when I was in school. So it was like, you know, straight up textbooks and ask the teacher and create a project with your peers and your cohort. But this is like international global information at the fingertips of people and it’s beyond Google. So I’m really still a little speechless. I’m still a little wondering about what’s next for the app itself, but then what’s next for humanity?
John: I’m going to let Chad GPT tell the listeners what it is. I just straight up ask the system, tell me about yourself. Here was the response. I’m an artificial intelligence trained by open AI. I am designed to assist users by generating human-like texts based on the prompts that I receive. I do not have personal experiences or feelings, and my knowledge is based on the data that was used to train me. I do not have the ability to browse the internet or access new information, so my knowledge is limited to what I was trained on, which was up until 2021. I am here to help answer questions and provide information to the best of my ability within the scope of my training. Is there anything specific you would like to know?
Tony: Man, do you think it can get some information on present professional podcast if you asked it?
John: Oh my goodness. Let’s so let’s add in the creative element. And this is going to be good. So let’s see, write me a poem that captures the essence of the present professional podcast. So remember it said, it said that it was only that its knowledge is limited to what I was trained on, which is up until 2021. Oh my God. Tony: Wait a minute. That came from chat GPT. Like you just asked it that and it just spit that poem out for man. That’s crazy.
John: Like what? Based on based on data from 2021 the podcast was released in July of 2020 or sorry July of 2022 man. That’s crazy. That is accurate.
Tony: I don’t know, bro. It’s in a poem. Man. The range is crazy. The range is definitely crazy from elementary school age kids all the way to what you just did, which is say, hey, write a poem on our podcast live while we’re on it right now.
John: Let’s see. Yeah, man, I don’t really even know what to say. Listeners, if you haven’t gotten on this yet, if you don’t know about it yet, oh, man, I hope you get to check this out and utilize it for whatever information or questions you have. I’m even just thinking in the, like, even with this preview, when we think about when ideas are spurred and like new movements are created, like how many questions will this answer just in its beta form that will like jumpstart I don’t know, people’s lives, projects, careers, schoolwork, like, like imagine the wave that even this preview is going to have on global intelligence or moving, you know, even a week’s worth of access of human curiosity. to this knowledge bank, you know, it will be this ripple. The ripple of this moment will be felt for generations. I believe that. Really? I don’t really know how else to say it. What areas of life do you think this will have the like an immediate and most profound impact on? I know we talked about business, but what about like? Yeah, I guess we talked about business and gifts. What other areas do you think, ma’am?
Tony: You say profound. I think about the people that sit on the teams of powerful people out there who may be politicians or judges or Whomever it may be a lot of people who are ceos they have teams and a lot of times the leader. Is not in position to utilize a platform like this are you lies resources that can change things that kind of just leave a talk they. Receive information and they go for it. But I think about the teams, the people that work with people who are decision makers, people who decide different laws, people who decide which roadways get built and which bridges are designed in various different cities, or people who decide the future for other people’s social lives. Just various different things and I think about those people that sit on those teams and if they are able to utilize this resource or resources like this, how it can influence decision making that happens at the top. And then when I think about generationally speaking, we are, you know, we’re kind of at the trans, at a real big transfer of wealth, knowledge, power, and also leadership position. So we’re getting ready to see more millennials in leadership, more Gen Z in leadership. And if we can harness or if we can grasp technology in a way that we can see it benefit our own decision making as we step into the arena of leadership and we are leading with Gen X still in the fold and baby boomers still in the fold and we can come with this kind of data driven approach to how we respond to tasks and respond to problems. Man, you talk about profound, that’s it right there.
John: Man, I didn’t even think about policy advisors like that. You’re right, the teams and wow. AI deciding what neighborhoods, what things get funding. Wow. Even in the non-profit space, I don’t know. There are some wild impacts that this thing can have. I feel like we’ve done a pretty good job introducing what this could mean, what this can mean for different parts of our lives as professionals. I think it would be good for the AI to write our closing statement. What do you think?
Tony: Oh, yeah.
John: Please, let’s do it. Okay, listeners. Let’s see how this goes. Here’s what I’m going to put it out for. Let’s see, write a closing statement for the listeners of the Present Professional podcast that will convince them to share it with all of their friends. Don’t let us down. I know, I’m like, come on, come on, ChatGPT. Let’s see what it has for us here. I mean, it’s… Oh, my gosh. What does it say?
Tony: Wow.
John: Oh, my gosh.
Tony: Come on, man, don’t hold us out. I want to know.
